BERNARDO DE GÁLVEZ HOME PAGE

Presented by the Latino Studies Department of Indiana University at Bloomington, this site is dedicated to Don Bernardo de Gálvez, governor of Spanish Luisiana and field marshal responsible for providing critically needed supplies to American rebels/patriots in the west during the American War for Independence and for the conquest of West Florida from British, Hessian, and American Loyalist forces in 1779-1781. See also Hispano America USA site (below) for additional information about Gálvez.

HISPANO AMERICA USA

An excellent online Hispanic heritage site, this provides information about Spanish colonial history, personalities, culture and living history programs, as well as the many contributions and achievements of Hispanic Americans. Includes links to a wide variety of other Spanish heritage and history-related sites.

EL CAZADOR  SHIPWRECK MUSEUM AND COINS

History of and artifacts from the wrecksite of the Spanish brigantine El Cazador, lost off the coast of Louisiana in 1784 with 450,000 pesos' worth of silver coins sent from Mexico City via Vera Cruz to pay the Spanish Louisiana government's debts. History, artifact illustrations, and coins salvaged from the wrecksite offered for purchase.

THE SANTA ELENA PROJECT

Archaeological investigations of the 1566-1587 Spanish colony of Santa Elena on Parris Island, South Carolina by the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology. History, ceramic artifacts from Spanish kiln discovered at site, links to other data related to the SCIAA's activities and personnel.

FORT MOSE: FREE AFRICAN SETTLEMENT

A site dedicated to the interpretation and history of Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, a free African fortified settlement in Spanish colonial Florida two miles from St. Augustine's Castillo de San Marcos. Generously illustrated.

ALAMO DE PARRAS

This site is dedicated to the early history of the mission San Antonio de Valero—better and later known as the Alamo—and Spanish Texas. Included at this excellent and informative site are pages dedicated to the history of the Alamo and the men who served there after the mission's secularization in 1793, the early history of Texas, artifacts related to the history of the region and the site, links to other Internet sites of interest, and intriguing trivia related to the Alamo, early Texas, and Mexico.

COLONIALS COLLIDE AT BLOODY MARSH

"On a sultry summer day in 1742, a handful of British and Spanish colonial troops faced each other on a Georgia coastal island and decided the fate of a colony." Article by Thomas G. Rodgers in Military History Magazine republished on the Internet through the History Net. Excellent overview of the conflict between Spanish and British colonists. Home and military history sections of this site contain valuable reference links and sources of well-researched historical research related to a myriad of topics.

RARE MAP COLLECTION AT THE HARGRETT LIBRARY

This excellent site presents dozens of Internet-viewable maps from the outstanding collection of the University of Georgia's Hargrett Library, which includes over 800 maps spanning 500 years of history. Although the interpretive emphasis of the map collection relates to southeastern North America (and Georgia in particular), there are many examples which are general rather than local in nature and well worth the considerable amount of time it will require to download and view each map.
